What Is A Summer Camp?
As its name implies, summer camp is a special place for children and teenagers. During summer months, supervised programs for youth development are conducted in these camps. Summer camps give the youth the chance to develop good skills, sports and other subject matters in an inviting and safe environment. Summer camps can result in favorable effect on the life of the youth. In fact, a study done by the American Camp Association stated that young people who attend summer camp have improved on their self esteem, independence, leadership, friendship skills, social comfort, peer relations, sense of adventure, environmental awareness, values, decisions and spirituality. A summer camp is located in a serene, quiet place away from the hassle and the din of the city. Typically, it is established in the woodlands with areas carefully manicured and maintained for hiking, trekking and exploring. Camps that are near brooks or rivers also offer canoeing and rafting. There are also camps that provide a wide variety of specialized activities. For instance, some camps specialize in teaching performing arts, computers and magic. Other summer camps are designed for children with special needs or for those who want to lose weight. Also, there are religiously affiliated summer camps that offer spiritual enlightenment. These are operated by organizations such as Evangelical Christian groups. Many summer camps feature log cabins or huts. Some may even have idyllic boathouses or decorative totem poles. But appearances are deceiving. Most summer camps are actually advanced and can handle all kinds of situations. Many are computerized and can monitor all enrollees with ease. They have all manner of communication. Most camps have cleared areas that can accommodate helicopters in case of an emergency. Most summer camps have counselors or adult supervisors. They take care, watch over and guide the young people during sessions. More importantly, they ensure that the campers are safe and sound in their camps. During their stint, counselors are designated to a unit consisting of a group of campers. Typically, counselors range from late teens to early 20's. Camp counseling is a good task for high schoolers or students in college during summer breaks. The length of stay often varies from camp to camp. Some summer camps allow campers to spend each night back to their homes. Others allow overnight stay. Campers usually stay a week or two with fellow campers, enjoying and participating in camp activities. For a young one, a couple of days or weeks stay in summer camp is an experience she or he can never forget. |
